The revenue of the preserved frozen potato market in Africa stood at $2.4B in 2024, surging by 4.8% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers’ margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2013 to 2024; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In value terms, Egypt ($531M), South Africa ($439M) and Cameroon ($194M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2024, together comprising 48% of the total market. Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Zambia and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
Among the main consuming countries, Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +4.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of market size over the period under review, while market for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, production attained the peak volume and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, preserved frozen potato production rose significantly to $2.5B in 2024 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2023 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The level of production peaked in 2024 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Production By Country
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2024 were Egypt (568K tons), Ethiopia (532K tons) and South Africa (310K tons), with a combined 61% share of total production. Ghana, Cameroon, Niger, Zambia and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Zambia (with a CAGR of +5.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports
Africa’s Imports of Frozen Potatoes (Prepared Or Preserved)
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved decreased by -23.3% to 124K tons in 2024. In general, imports, however, recorded a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 162K tons in 2023, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
In value terms, preserved frozen potato imports contracted dramatically to $160M in 2024. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $210M in 2023, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
Imports By Country
In 2024, Nigeria (20K tons), Morocco (18K tons), Libya (15K tons), South Africa (11K tons) and Senegal (10K tons) represented the key importer of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved in Africa, comprising 60% of total import. Botswana (6.6K tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.3% share, followed by Mauritius (4.8%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (4.7K tons), Namibia (2.7K tons) and Ghana (2.1K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +28.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest preserved frozen potato importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($30M), Morocco ($26M) and Libya ($17M), with a combined 46% share of total imports.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of +31.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
In 2024, the import price in Africa amounted to $1,286 per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Import price indicated moderate growth from 2013 to 2024: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, preserved frozen potato import price increased by +52.7% against 2021 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2023 an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,296 per ton, leveling off in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($1,776 per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($462 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports
Africa’s Exports of Frozen Potatoes (Prepared Or Preserved)
In 2024, exports of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved in Africa skyrocketed to 155K tons, increasing by 41% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2024 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, preserved frozen potato exports soared to $221M in 2024. In general, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2023 with an increase of 47%. The level of export peaked in 2024 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports By Country
Egypt prevails in exports structure, recording 142K tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2024. It was distantly followed by South Africa (9.6K tons), achieving a 6.2% share of total exports.
Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen potatoes prepared or preserved exports, with a CAGR of +13.7% from 2013 to 2024. At the same time, South Africa (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Egypt (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2013-2024, the share of South Africa (-2.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Egypt ($203M) remains the largest preserved frozen potato supplier in Africa, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($13M), with a 6% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt amounted to +15.5%.
Export Prices By Country
The export price in Africa stood at $1,426 per ton in 2024, leveling off at the previous year. Export price indicated mild growth from 2013 to 2024: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, preserved frozen potato export price increased by +56.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2023 an increase of 28%. The level of export peaked in 2024 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2024, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($1,422 per ton), while South Africa stood at $1,399 per ton.
