AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) – An Akron man was sentenced Monday for a potato chip dispute that led to a shooting.
According to the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office, Melvin Wright, Jr., 43, was sentenced to nine to 12 years in prison for the shooting.
Wright previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder, having weapons while under disability, and illegal possession of a firearm.
On November 28, 2023, Wright approached the victim in a nightclub on Stanton Avenue and asked for some of their potato chips.
When the victim said no, Wright shot him in the face.
The victim drove himself to the hospital and survived after six days of treatment.
“Summit County is safer without Melvin Wright on our streets,” said Prosecutor Kolkovich. “Senseless violence has no place in Akron, and I am grateful that the survivor of this crime is continuing his courageous recovery. Thank you to my assistant prosecutors and the Akron and Metro Transit police departments for their work in holding Wright accountable.”
When released, Wright must register as a violent offender for 10 years.
