ENFIELD, N.C. (WITN) – With Christmas coming up next week, you may be wondering what dish to bring to your big gathering or how to pay for it all. Well, one initiative here in the East is helping out.
A sweet potato giveaway in Enfield was perfect for those wanting to make a delicious sweet potato pie or other dishes for the holidays.
“It’s good to see everybody come together and help each other and it’s an event that brings us all here, and it’s much needed,” Enfield resident Terri Anderson said.
Cars lined up and parked behind Jennie’s Cafe Wednesday, as hundreds of people brought various kinds of totes, boxes, and buckets, and filled them to the brim with delicious potatoes.
Of course, there were plenty of recipes that came to mind when picking the best sweet potatoes.
“Potato pies, potato jacks, baked potato, baked potato sweet, sweet potato pudding,” Rocky Mount resident James Whitaker said.
Around 40,000 pounds of yams, donated from a farm in Wilson, filled 30 cardboard bins. Delores Ward says this initiative started almost 10 years ago when they saw a need.
“The importance of giving is helping people,” Ward said. “Groceries have gotten higher and higher.”
So whether you’re looking to bake, fry, or boil your sweet potatoes this holiday season, residents like Anderson say to enjoy time with loved ones, as that’s what it’s all about.
“Loving your brothers and sisters, everybody being together and being friends,” Anderson said.
If you missed out on the sweet potatoes Wednesday, Ward says they will be out there again on Thursday around noon, helping serve Eastern Carolina during the holidays.
