Fried, mashed, or baked—potatoes are the ultimate comfort food that can be used to make an array of treats. Fans of the readily available cooking staple are well aware of the delicious ways to consume it. While many enjoy the taste of french fries and spiral potatoes, few might have heard of potato chains before. A French chef recently shared a video crafting this edible marvel from scratch.
In the video shared on Instagram, Chef Didier Leroy explains the step-by-step process to make potato chains at home. He starts by peeling the potatoes and guiding viewers to peel the potatoes until the dark spots on the surface are completely eliminated. Next, the chef cuts the edges of the potatoes in square-like shapes.
Moving on, he demonstrates cutting small rectangular shapes in the middle of each slice square. He then pierces/acupunctures it carefully with a metal skewer through its centre. Using his hand, he opens up each piece and makes some more cuts inside—in between the previous shapes. Finally, he unfolds the joined segments to reveal the potato chain. The final step is to deep-fry the potato chains until they turn golden brown and crispy.
In the video, the chef reveals that he once created 40 such pieces for his father’s birthday.
As expected, the clip quickly garnered the attention of social media users. Viewers flocked to the comments section and praised the chef’s exceptional culinary skills. Many users commended his vision of creating such an interesting craft, while others expressed excitement to try the recipe. A few chimed in to say that this video is proof of the potato’s versatility.
“Love how chain link potatoes remind him of his father. What a unique memory/connection. Cooking is such an interesting craft,” read a comment.
A user quipped, “If you can make a French fry bracelet, I think every woman would be running there!!” Another added, “This is incredible!! What mastery!!!”
“Beautiful! Wonderful chef. Would love to learn this,” posted a user.
An individual wrote, “Brilliance never goes unnoticed.”
Finally, an account remarked, “Every time I think a potato can’t be made better, it is.”
The viral video has raked in more than 1.4 million views and over 72k on Instagram so far.
