Whether it’s at the Royal Easter Show, a music festival or outside a concert, chances are you’ve lined up at a food truck to try chips on a stick. The popular snack, also known as a potato twister, potato spiral, or tornado potato, is a twist on the traditional potato chip with a whole potato being spiralled onto a bamboo skewer, fried and then seasoned.
If you haven’t tried chips on a stick yourself, it might be because they’re often around $10, and you’d rather spend your money elsewhere. However, a DIY version is going viral on social media as people discover how to recreate the snack at home.
One woman, Dasha (@daria.shark), has racked up over 18 million views on Instagram after she posted her tutorial alongside the caption: “I wish I knew this potato hack last year!”

The video shows Dasha inserting a bamboo skewer into a whole potato and holding it against the slice side of a box grater. She then twists the potato so it spirals inside the grater, and then spreads it out on the skewer to make it look just like traditional chips on a stick.
The perfect camping snack
Once you’ve spiralised the potato, you could either cook it in the oven, air fryer, or, as Dasha suggests, the campfire while camping.
“I actually discovered this hack while experimenting with simple camping-style recipes that require minimal ingredients and gear, and it turned out to be both fun and surprisingly useful,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle.
“What I love most is how quick and versatile it is, especially when you’re outdoors and want something warm and comforting without much fuss.”
‘Genius cooking hack’
The video has received plenty of comments from social media users praising the “genius cooking hack” and admitting they can’t wait to test it out themselves.
“This potato hack is a game changer, definitely trying this next time I go camping!” one person wrote, while another added, “Great idea”.

“Nice potato hack, especially for summer camping season,” a third replied, followed by someone else who said they “must try” it soon.
