JACKSON – Mississippi Legislature might make sweet potato its new state vegetable.
House Bill 287 will aim to name sweet potatoes the state veggie. This bill was introduced by State Reps. Lester Carpenter and Johnathan Lancaster.
Sweet potatoes contribute 92 million to the economy, but compared to the 1.56 billion that states get from soybeans of 67.5 million dollar for corn.
If this bill is passed, the sweet potato will be the state’s vegetable starting July 1st. It would join other magnolia state icons like milk as the state’s drink.
