Tesco has been selling the variety for a limited time over Christmas since 2021 as part of its Finest range, but following increasing demand, Branston, another supplier, now has enough crops for the Nemo to last for another seven months.
Experts believe the move, which will see Tesco stock the Nemo in more than 400 stores, could represent a comeback for the spud as it fights for space on the plate of the British consumer.
Scott Walker, the chief executive of the industry body GB Potatoes, said new variants allowed potatoes to compete against popular and quicker-cooking alternatives such as rice and pasta.
He told The Telegraph: “People have busy lifestyles and they are looking for faster and more convenient food options.
“In terms of rice and pasta, these are dishes that can be cooked faster whereas potatoes traditionally take a bit more time. However, new variations that cut back on cooking time make potatoes more attractive for consumers.”
He added: “New variations are leading the fightback for potatoes.”
Nemo potatoes have distinctive pink skin with creamy yellow patches around their large eye-like markings, giving them a bi-coloured appearance and leading to their name.
