The economist Deirdre N. McCloskey now describes herself as a “literary, quantitative, postmodern, free-market, progressive-Episcopalian, ex-Marxist, Midwestern woman from Boston who was once a man. Not ‘conservative’! I’m a Christian classical liberal.”
I think of myself as creative, geospatial, intersectional, post-Keynesian, progressive-Buddhist, native Californian, having always been who I still am, a likely classical-romantic liberal.
But what’s interesting is that while McCloskey withdrew from a debate with a Michael Knowles at University of Pittsburgh in 2023 meant to attract RWNJs as a protest provocation and an anti-trans event, she continues to associate herself with conservative institutions like the University of Austin, Texas. Tenure and retirement are always important resources that protect one from bigotry, maybe.
