A Presque Isle farm recently helped some families that were affected by Hurricane Milton.
Hemphill Farms donated numerous 50-pound bags of potatoes to a Maine veteran who had initially intended to buy a few bags of potatoes to take to friends and family in the Tampa Bay region, which was hit particularly hard by the hurricane that made landfall on Wednesday. The Vietnam veteran was making the trip with his grandson.
According to the farm’s Facebook page, workers were able to load 11 bags of potatoes into the man’s truck for him to take to those affected by the storm. The bags had to be loaded into the truck’s backseat, as the man had already filled the truck bed with gas and clean water.
As Milton approached the Florida shoreline, it spawned at least a dozen tornadoes, and made landfall as a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of around 120 miles per hour. As of Thursday afternoon, Milton left around 3.4 million Floridians without power.
Hemphill Farms did not immediately respond to a message sent Thursday afternoon.
