AKRON, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) – A man from Ohio was sentenced Monday for a dispute over potato chips that led to a shooting.
The Summit County Prosecutor’s Office said 43-year-old Melvin Wright was sentenced to nine to 12 years in prison for the shooting.
Wright pleaded guilty to attempted murder, having weapons while under disability and illegal possession of a firearm.
On Nov. 28, 2023, Wright approached the victim in an Akron nightclub and asked for some of the victim’s potato chips.
When the victim declined to offer up his chips, Wright reportedly shot him in the face.
The victim drove himself to the hospital and survived after six days of treatment.
“Summit County is safer without Melvin Wright on our streets,” Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich said. “Senseless violence has no place in Akron, and I am grateful that the survivor of this crime is continuing his courageous recovery.”
When released, Wright must register as a violent offender for 10 years.
