The use of a plastic potato pre-germination box can help to increase the germination rate and thus promote the growth of healthy, high-yielding plants.
Pre-germination is crucial for good potato growth. We spoke with Gerold Wilms from bekuplast GmbH about what makes a good potato germination box. “Uniform light and ventilation of the potatoes is crucial for pre-germination. That is why we have developed a special germination box in which the potatoes are optimally prepared,” explains Gerold Wilms. To ensure that the potatoes receive sufficient light, bekuplast’s potato pre-germination boxes are made of translucent material. “We do not color the material. That is why it is slightly translucent, which further improves the incidence of light, especially compared to wooden boxes,” explains Gerold Wilms. The plastic containers are also designed to cast as few shadows as possible. This ensures that all the potatoes get enough light and sprout evenly.

The ventilation holes in the container ensure good air circulation. This prevents the formation of mold and creates healthy germination conditions.
Plastic containers also have advantages over wooden crates when it comes to handling. The potatoes can be placed in and removed quickly. After planting the potatoes, the empty crates can be stacked crosswise to save space.
Although the containers are pleasantly lightweight for easy handling, they are very stable and durable and can easily be used for several planting cycles.
