LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Michigan ranks eighth in the nation for potato production. Two billion pounds of taters are harvested in Michigan every year.
Thursday was Potato Day at the State Capitol. Potato experts got a chance to go head-to-head or eye-to-eye with lawmakers and key agricultural decision-makers.
The Michigan Potatoes Association recently worked on an impact study with Michigan State.
The result, $2.5 billion of economic activity for the state per year.
“We grew more potatoes for potato chips than any other state wherever you are in the nation if you open up a bag of chips, you’ve got a one in four chance those potatoes were grown right here in the state of Michigan,” said Kelly Turner, Executive Director, Michigan Potatoes.
Those who attended got a free lunch: A mashed potato bar.
