
The Food and Drug Administration issued an update on a previous Lay’s potato chip recall due to serious risks if consumed.
Here’s what you should know about the new guidance.
Why Lays potato chips were recalled
Frito-Lay issued a recall on Dec. 16 of a limited number of 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips that may contain undeclared milk. If consumed by those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk, serious or life-threatening allergic reactions could occur.
The recall was issued after the company was alerted through a consumer contact.
On Jan. 27, the FDA updated the recall to Class I, the highest risk classification for recalls given by the agency.
A Class I recall is defined as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” according to the FDA’s website.
A Class II recall “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” A Class III recall “is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.”
No allergic reactions related to the issue have been reported to date, according to Frito-Lay.
Where are the recalled Lay’s potato chips found?
The chips included in the recall were distributed to Oregon and Washington state retail stores and e-commerce distributors.
The FDA reports that these products were available for consumer purchase as early as Nov. 3.
Delaware so far has not been included in the list of impacted states.

How to know if your bag of Lay’s potato chips was recalled
The recalled chips are in a flexible bag. Contaminated bags have a UPC of 28400 31041 and must have a “guaranteed fresh” date of Feb. 11, 2025, and a manufacturing code of 6462307xx or 6463307xx.
No other Lay’s products, chip flavors, sizes or variety packs are recalled.
What to do if you have a contaminated bag of Lay’s potato chips
If you have an allergy or sensitivity to milk, you should not consume a Lay’s bag of chips matching the item recall description. Frito-Lay advises all who are at risk to discard the product immediately.
